“World on a String” is an artificial scenery, created using leftover Styrofoam that was initially used for thermal insulation of the -30 Degrees Koelhuis building. Rather than allowing it to become discarded waste, Sjoerd breathes new life into a once-functional material.
Drawing strong inspiration from foam rocks in amusement parks and stage design, Sjoerd creates a work that slowly reveals its artificiality. Intentionally breaking the illusion, the artist asks, what if you emphasize the fact that it's all just a set? Wouldn't you start paying attention to what's behind the facade?
